Biography
History Some details are still missing, but updating history someday in near future. History of Kansalaistottelemattomuus started propably by late summer 2000 after Diaspora split up. From that band, Janne and Jukkeli wanted to continue in a band together. But who else would want to play with us, and on the other hand, with who we wanted to play with? We didn't want people, who had too many other bands already (quite a finnish style toplay in several bands at the same time), but also wanted to have people who learn songs fast enough, can handle their instruments, are ready to tour sometimes, and last, but most important, are people who are nice persons as well. First we found Mase through a friend to play bass. He could play, had just moved to Helsinki and was interested in a band. A good vocalist has always been a problem to find, so we started to focus on that. Someone had the idea, if Deek would like to join us. He had a girlfriend (later wife) in Helsinki and he was coming here very often, so possibly he would also have a second band here. We asked and he agreed, so we had a vocalist. But still we needed to find another quitarist. After asking some friends who that might be, we found a guy who fit in our crew and wanted to be in a band, Nooa. So first real line-up we got included: Deek - vocals, Janne and Nooa - guitars, Mase - bass and Jukkeli - drums. Our age range was (and still is) quite huge, oldest is about twice older than youngest, but age is just a number, ain't it? At some point Jukkeli moved to Turku, but we practiced regularly with only one guitar as Janne played drums when Jukkeli wasn't there. And also Deek visited Scotland every now and then. After several months of practising and writing songs, we ended up playing in a festival, which was organized by Jukkeli and Janne with lots of other people. But of course, it couldn't be our first gig, so we had a practising gig in Helsinki just a few days before. Almost nobody knew our band by the time of the festival, but there were really many people watching us having a good pogo etc (see media section for video). That happened in september 2001. In January 2002 we played our third gig, it was also a festival gig, but much smaller and it happened indoors (very good actually, because it was propably -20c outside). In may 2002 we went on our first tour. 8 gigs were booked it Germany. We actually didn't even start nor end driving together, 'cause Deek flew straight from Scotland to Germany. We met our tour organizer and got a list of venues with phone numbers and at the end there was a text "Have fun and die!". Well, that's propably strange German humour, but it wasn't actually that fun as we actually almost died. We were driving towards Berlin about 120-140km/h while one of the tires blew out. But we were very lucky as no other cars were closer than 500 meters to us while we needed all 3 lanes for zigzagging. Van almost turned too much to the left to start rolling sideways. But our driver managed to turn wheel enough to keep the van upright and stopped on the right side of the autobahn. That was propably the scariest thing that happened in traffic to any of us, even Deek who has toured numerous kilometers with over 1000 gigs and Janne same with about 400 gigs. After changing the sparetire, which also was a little damaged, we could continue. We never found a garage, so we drove all the way to Berlin max 80km/h and kept everybody alive and unharmed. Next day in Berlin it took several hours to find a new tire we needed for the next drive. Anyway, after spending time on that and we still had that damaged tire with us, we realized we don't have any possibility of getting to our gig in Münich in time. So we cancelled that gig, the only gig we have cancelled so far. But I guess we had good reason for that, our lives are still more important than one gig even if it would be fun. So after all we actually played 7 gigs in Germany, which was 70% of our total gigs by the time. In 2002 we played 11 gigs in total, that was our most active year so far. That summer contained also 2 outdoor festival gigs, both very legendary in a way. Puntala-rock is simply the best festival in Finland, we really recommend people to come there, if you have plans to visit north-east Europe at the last weekend of july. Another festival is Monttubileet (has two meanings: literally pitparty and a funeral), which is organized 70km north of Helsinki, middle of nothing in a forest at the sandpit. That is free festival and organizer wanted us to play there. All of us couldn't come there, so we made extra line-up without practising, because organizer really wanted us to be there. As we knew in advance, it will be fucked up anyway, we didn't care how much drinking we did before the gig. And of course we had to play last (can't remember was it our desicion or organizers). Well, you may guess result: it was total chaos and we couldn't finish any of our songs. Anyway, audience didn't mind as they don't really come there for bands, but for the atmosphere. Think about having 100-200 punks drinking self-made and/or legal booze inside the forest, and as it is a sandpit, people get really dirty after 2 days of heavy drinking (finnish people are quite wellknown of heavy drinking, but that's heavy even for us). Around 2003 Jukkeli decided to leave Finland and move to Austria, so we had to find a new drummer. We surely still wanted to play with him, but it would make the band too much of a project that would never play. We already had one who lived half the time outside of Finland and we didn't get to practice too much with him. Good he's "only" the vocalist, so we don't need him always. But if the drummer would move abroad, it would kill the band. So we continued writing new songs and practising with one guitar and Janne on drums, and at the same time searching for a new drummer. Nooa had an idea of having Mikko on drums. Almost none of us had heard him play, which was quite weird as we knew him quite well. When we tested him, he sounded really good and fit in the band very well with his heavier playing and our songs had gone into a heavier direction already. A short time later Mase had some reason to stop playing in a band, so we had to find a new bass player. Juhani was often in our practise room, legendary Vuoritalo and he became our new bass player. Well, later he moved to Tampere, which made practising again more difficult, so we ended up in a situation, that we have to replace the bassplayer again. We tried 2 possible candidates. First one was ok, but we wanted to test him another time to make sure he's the right one. But well, shit happens, he was too wasted somewhere in Helsinki and forgot to come to the session. And as we already tested another possible bassplayer, Lari, we decided to take him without another test. Anyway he was actually sounding heavier, so he would fit in well with our sound. So it was time to practice all the songs again. There had been so many line-up changes that we basically haven't had time to prepare for the gigs nor studio. And that wasn't the last change. Our second guitarist hadn't been too active lately and one day as we were practising he surprised us all (even himself). He stopped playing in the middle of a song, put down the guitar and said "I will not play guitar anymore" and went to spray some walls inside the house. Well, we had no choice than to start to find a new guitar player fast as we had some gigs booked in two months. Funny, but true, he was too drunk to remember leaving the band. He wanted to come back, but unfortunately it was too late as we already found Jonne to play guitar with us. So we found our current line-up. In 2007 we managed to play 9 gigs, including Puntala-rock again, which is our second most active year so far. We also were in studio and recorded 16 songs for upcoming cd, but we had several problems with that. One guitaramp had propably some element broken and it made sound unstable ie. unusable. Also some drum toms cannot be heard. Those are things we couldn't really fix by mixing. So after the rest of the year of practicing more and playing some gigs we decided to try again. We went to Napalmi Studio in Tampere for two sessions in february of 2008 . After just finishing the last sessions we believe the next record will kick your balls to the wall. Updates on release in the news section as we get them. Then in march 2008 we had outdoor gig in Helsinki (yes, wintertime in Finland outdoors... unbelievable it weren't that cold, several degrees on plus zero and no snow). There was Box Wars, which means that earlier people were building armors, axes and other historical weapons from cardboard and while aggressive bands are playing they have some kind of war and winner is who's cardboard armor is last existing. It was great fun... so long it lasts. Around the fourth song we played, the owner (big boss) of the venue, came and said that cops are waiting and come here if we don't play quieter. Well, we couldn't as drums were too loud anyway. After few dirty words against cops the big boss unplugged us. So after no electricity we had to stop. Anyway, good memories of that and full support to Box Wars wherever it happens in the future (and yes, we will come back to play in Bx Wars). Then we had short tour in so called Great Britain, 2 gigs in England and 1 in Scotland. It was really hard to carry some of our equipments in public transportation and also moneywise wasn't really smart. But who cares about that as long you meet wonderful people and have good gigs? That's punk and that's the way we do it now and in future. Mini-tour included gig in 'North London Punx Picnic' -festival with shitloads of great bands. Then we played few gigs more or less randomly including most important of them Punk'n'roll 2008 in Estonia , 'Gig against nuclear power' near nuclear plant in Loviisa, Finland and benefit gig for 'Union of conscientious objectors (of Finland)'. Really soon after that we started bigger European tour including Sweden, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, back to Germany, then flight to Greece and 2 gigs there and flight back to Germany again (3 times in Germany including 4 gigs), Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and finally last gig in Helsinki, Finland. It were all fine except somewhere on tour we heard that nazis were burned the venue we played in Stockholm, Sweden just few days ago. Full respect to Swedish anti-fascists that they want to rebuild venue again for making concerts and, which is more important, have true activism. Well, also we had some minor problems too including for example our "van" (which we by the way called bull-transportation-vehicle because it was last used for that usage before our tour) hits German limousine with German flags, while band was in Greece and driver alone with the car in Berlin, Germany. Maybe it was some German politician and propably German government paid for that crash as we ever heard about that anymore. Who knows? Limousine got bad damage, but our vehicle only small ones. Well, there would be too much to tell more specific of all the gigs we made or the travel itself, so better to continue... In year 2008 we had most active gig year including 26 gigs. Then we were writing new songs, practising them and finally also recording them during the spring time 2009. We made totally 14 new songs for several records. First 4 songs will come out in January 2010 in "Sota Poliisia Vastaan" (=War Against Police) 7" EP. In year 2009 we made only 4 gigs, but there is bit of story behind them. We played in "Katu on Punk" (='Street is Punk'), which is kinda Punk version of 'Reclaim the Streets' in Helsinki. It was just great, one of the most important street which leads traffic from east to west of Helsinki, were blocked. It also meant that it had to be blocked in such an wide area (many small roads to come in and out the big road) for several hundreds of meters. And the stage was under the stony bridge, which was interesting as well. And we also played another outdoor gig in Turku in it's only pedestrian street, where were some international permofmers, but the "best" of all, it was hosted by miss Finland 1996 Lola Wallinkoski(ex-Odusoga). There were not so many punks, but at least it was different gig. Also have to mention few words about gig in Helsinki on 9.11. That was gig where Kude, newest player of us, were played in half of the gigs we ever made and also first gig where Janne didn't play as he were in hospital last night because of high body temperature and breathing difficulties. But it wasn't famous svineflu, of what we also have song about in next 7". Just don't be paranoid (just "play paranoid").. ...and the story continues in 2010... | ||||||||||||||||||||
